Limescale buildup caused by hard water is unavoidable without countermeasures – and the harder the water, the more limescale naturally accumulates in the warmest areas of the water system.

How can the formation of limescale in boilers and water tanks be reliably prevented?

By removing calcium and magnesium salts from the water – this is done using water softeners or desalination plants – if no calcium salts are present in the water, then limescale cannot form. Therefore, water softeners or desalination plants are always effective.

An ion exchanger exchanges calcium salts for sodium salts (water softening) or simply binds all ions (desalination). Sodium salts are extremely water-soluble and therefore do not form limescale deposits, even at higher temperatures.

Once the ion exchanger is saturated with calcium salts (limescale), it is regenerated with concentrated saline solution, which then flows into the drain. Depending on the system, this regeneration can be fully automatic or can also be triggered manually.

Corrosivity as a companion to water treatment

Soft water, whether softened or partially demineralized, unfortunately always has a corrosive effect. Therefore, a suitable corrosion inhibitor should always be added after descaling; maintaining the pH value within the correct range may be sufficient.

Only the removal of the lime-forming substances (calcium salts) reliably prevents the formation of limescale deposits – therefore, a water softening measure is always successful.
