Limescale and boiler scale, corrosion and microbial infestation
All naturally occurring bodies of water contain more or less large amounts of calcium and magnesium salts; when the water is heated and/or evaporates, these dissolved salts are precipitated and deposits form.
Water scale forms as soon as water is heated and, chemically speaking, consists of calcium carbonate or magnesium carbonate; it forms, for example, in instantaneous water heaters, boilers, heat exchangers, etc.
When water evaporates in a system, limescale forms – all the salts dissolved in the water remain as deposits. Unlike water scale, limescale in boilers can contain not only calcium and magnesium salts, but also calcium sulfate (gypsum) and silicates (silicic acid).
In addition to deposits, coatings of corrosion products (= rust) and organic substances (microorganisms, plant remains or their decomposition products, humic substances, etc.) can also form in water-bearing systems.
To prevent the progression of corrosion, we use our protective agents, which are added to the water and protect the metallic surface via chemical-physical mechanisms (protective layers, binding of corrosive substances, …).
To kill microbes on the one hand and remove organic deposits such as slime, biomass from microorganisms and algae, and plant-biological residues on the other, oxidizing additives (usually with active chlorine or active oxygen) are necessary, which act directly on the organic material; the degraded organic matter can then be easily rinsed away.
The refurbishment of a water-bearing system definitely results in…
- … a reduction in energy consumption through the reduction of deposits and coatings;
- … the prevention of possible damage, e.g., due to thermal stresses;
- … only short operational interruptions, because our ready-to-use products enable rapid implementation;
- … optimal protection of the respective metallic material, i.e., no corrosive stress on the system;
- … in case of emergency, prevention of health hazards caused by biological deposits or biological infestation.
We can carry out our refurbishment work online (without interrupting operations) or offline (e.g. in preparation for a recommissioning).
Unfortunately, chemical refurbishment (i.e., stone removal and/or rust removal) always necessitates an interruption of operations.
