Biocide treatment in cooling towers

Introducing air into the cooling circuit water accelerates the growth of bacteria and algae in the cooling tower. This leads to deposits that reduce heat transfer in the refrigeration units and decrease cooling capacity; it also promotes aeration corrosion.

Microbiological growth in the cooling tower or the cooling system as a whole can be prevented by using special biocides that are specifically formulated for the hardness stabilizers used. The following products are suitable for this purpose:

Oxidizing biocides

  • MIKROBIZID-BR

    A biocide with nitrates in combination with heterocyclic biocidal nitrogen compounds, with an exceptionally broad spectrum of activity.

  • Bromine-containing biocide in tablet form, effective against algae and all types of bacteria (including Legionella and slime bacteria), especially for industrial water cycles; particular advantage over chlorine: effectiveness especially at higher pH values.

  • An inorganic granulate containing approximately 60-65% active chlorine; based on calcium hypochlorite; even after years of storage, only minimal loss of active substance; for disinfecting drinking water, process water, and bathing water.

  • MULTICID AB scaled - Dr. Böhm - Wasserbehandlung, chem. Sanierung & Wassertechnik

    Chlorine dioxide, a highly effective broad-spectrum biocide, works through oxygen oxidation – produced directly for application by mixing the two supplied components.

Non-oxidizing biocides

  • MIKROBIZID-AT

    Protection based on special QUAVs, for the treatment of cooling waters and swimming pools against algae (green, blue-green and black algae), bacteria and fungi; effective over a wide pH range.

  • MIKROBIZID BTS scaled - Dr. Böhm - Wasserbehandlung, chem. Sanierung & Wassertechnik

    Protection based on special polymeric QUAVs, for the treatment of cooling waters and swimming pools against algae (green, blue-green and black algae), mucus-forming bacteria and wood-attacking fungi (cooling towers); effective over a wide pH range.

  • MIKROBIZID-1850

    MIKROBIZID 1850 scaled - Dr. Böhm - Wasserbehandlung, chem. Sanierung & WassertechnikBromine-free biocide, contains heterocyclic nitrogen compounds, effectively controls algae, fungal or bacterial infestation; special advantage: very good solubility in water – therefore, after addition, distribution throughout the entire system within a short time.

Biodegradable biocides

One of the requirements of environmental protection is that a biocide used in the cooling system should be highly effective, but then decompose into non-toxic components as quickly as possible. To meet these requirements, we offer biocides (based on chlorine, bromine, or oxygen) that are short-lived and rapidly degradable, such as:

    Chlorine dioxide, a highly effective broad-spectrum biocide, works through oxygen oxidation – produced directly for application by mixing the two supplied components; it degrades directly to chloride and chlorite, i.e., no AOX compounds are formed.
